You don't need a multi-thousand-dollar studio. If you are on Mac, you can get started completely for free by simply downloading GarageBand or following along in Logic Pro. Windows users can use any music production software of their choice. All you need to start is a computer, an audio interface, a microphone, and a pair of headphones.

Accepted Answer

When tracking vocals, you must turn your speakers completely down and monitor through headphones to prevent click tracks or instrumental bleed from leaking back into your live microphone track. Keep a tight grip on your quarter-inch to eighth-inch headphone adapters, too —they tend to go missing around the studio pretty frequently!

Q3: What is latency, and how do I fix it when I hear a delay in my headphones while singing?

Accepted Answer

Latency is the awkward audio delay between the time you speak into the mic and the time you hear it in your ears. When recording, you want your I/O buffer size set as low as possible (ideally 32, 64, or 128 samples) so you hear your voice in real-time. If you hear clicks or pops, scale it up slightly. If your computer is struggling, you can bypass software latency entirely by turning on Direct Input Monitoring on your audio interface to hear a completely dry signal before it hits the computer.

Q4: How do I know if my microphone input level is set correctly, and  what is "clipping"?

Accepted Answer

You want your recording level hitting "unity level"— not too loud, not too quiet, where the green meter bounces consistently without slamming into the red. Going into the red causes digital clipping, which ruins a take with harsh distortion. If you are using an analog interface with built-in vintage preamps or hardware compressors (like a Universal Audio Volt interface), you want to stage your gain right where it hits the yellow to take advantage of that hardware analog warmth, without overdriving the channel.

Q5: I don't have a professional acoustic vocal booth at home. Can I still get clean recordings?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. In an untreated home room, your voice projects past the mic, bounces off the bare walls, and reflects back into the capsule, creating an unwanted room echo. We show you how to use a standard foam isolation panel behind the microphone to mitigate those reflections at the source.
